Duckworth-Lewis-Stern, Explained
Work out a revised target when overs are cut, or check the live par score mid-chase — using the real, published D/L resource table.
Assumes Team 1 batted a full, uninterrupted innings. If Team 1's innings was also cut short, this simple version won't be exact.
Fill in all three fields to see the revised target.
This uses the D/L Standard Edition table — the real, published version of the method for club and amateur cricket. The exact table used by DLS software in international matches is proprietary to the ICC and not public, so this can differ slightly from the number shown on a TV broadcast.
Understanding DLS
What does DLS stand for in cricket?
DLS stands for Duckworth-Lewis-Stern — the method used to set a fair revised target when a limited-overs match is shortened by rain or another interruption. It was created by statisticians Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis, and later refined by Steven Stern, whose name was added in 2014.
What is the DLS method in cricket?
It treats overs remaining and wickets in hand as a combined "resource." When overs are lost, the method works out what percentage of resources each team had, and adjusts the target in proportion — so a team that loses overs isn’t simply held to the original target with less time to chase it.
How is the DLS par score calculated?
Par score = Team 1’s total × (resources used by Team 2 so far ÷ resources Team 1 had for their full innings). If Team 2’s actual score is above par, they’re ahead of the game; below par, they’re behind.
Is this the official DLS calculator used in international matches?
No — the exact resource table used by the DLS software in international cricket today is proprietary to the ICC and not publicly released. This calculator uses the Standard Edition resource table that Duckworth and Lewis themselves published for club and amateur cricket, which is real and accurate, but can differ slightly from the exact number shown on a TV broadcast.
